This was literally going to be my "once in a lifetime" trip to Europe, so, in order to maximize my experiences, I did a lot of pre-planning at home so I could take full advantage of the free-time built into the tour itinerary.

If you are a Planner, check out my strategy below -OR- if you prefer to just go with the flow, click "Take My Tour" now!

  • Make a single folder with a list of all the free time opportunities you will have in your itinerary.

  • Check your guidebook for ideas and search online for the "Top 10 things To Do" in each locale.

  • Prioritize 2 or 3 options for each time slot and verify the days and hours of operation on their websites - having several options gives you flexibility to adapt to unexpected changes.

  • Consult a map to determine in advance how you'll get there and the most efficient order for your visits if you have multiple stops to make.  Since I was not taking a smartphone, I printed out online maps and used the back side of the page to list my choices for the day and any pertinent information for them.

  • Remember to pack the folder!  My folder had a one page map for each day of free time excursions so that, in the morning, I could grab that day's map and head out without having to figure it all out.

  • Download some of Rick's Audio Europe files before leaving home to take on your own walking tours or to enjoy on the bus - I did take a tablet for journaling and to email my family when Wi-Fi was available.

  • Let your guide know if you're planning to opt out of any scheduled group activity - your Rick Steves guide will also be an invaluable resource for free time suggestions and advice.
